In Miracle League of Frisco game, the Rangers and Cardinals squared off

The Texas Rangers play the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 tonight at the Ballpark in Arlington, but a bunch of kids kicked off their own version of the competition in Frisco this morning.

Jared “J-Rod” Silvas pitched for his Rangers team against the Cardinals in the Miracle League of Frisco game, a sports league for children with special needs.

The 11-year-old wears No. 54, just like his idol Matt Harrison of the Rangers, who will pitch against the Cardinals tonight.

“[I had] fun because I felt like Matt Harrison today,” said Silvas, who has cerebellar atrophy, a degenerative disease affecting balance, coordination and muscle tone.

The league consists of players ages 5 to 18 with mental and physical challenges from across Collin County. The league began in 2006 with 40 players and has grown to 140 players this season, which ends next week with a trophy day after the final games.

Like every game, today’s ended in a tie and every participant went to bat, ran the bases and scored with the help of an assigned buddy.
